India mandates 26 weeks of maternity leave, outpacing U.S.

India mandates 26 weeks of maternity leave, outpacing U.S.India mandates 26 weeks of maternity leave, outpacing U.S.Paid maternity leave in India has officiallyjumped from 12 to 26 weeks, according to the BBC.Its a huge step for the nationsmothers-to-be, but this increase applies to the births of their first two children only. For any kids that follow, mothers still have have 12 weeks. Indiasparliament passed the bill late last week. The bill is an important milestone for India, where women in the workdistributionspolitik are still rare womens workforce participation in India is lower than that of sub-Saharan Africa, according to the Asia Foundation.Globally, there are still improvements to be made in terms of giving new mothers and fatherspaid time off.Policy changes in India that the U.S. would envyThe increase in Indias paid maternity leave applies to women at companies with more than 10 employees, and the bill makes it mandatory for companies with more than 50 employees to have a nursery nearby, according to the Financial Times. This will help thousands of women and lead to much healthier children, saidManeka Gandhi, Minister of Women and Child Development, according to the BBC.This is a historic move for reproductive rights in India, but critics have spoken out against it, for much the same reason paid maternity and paternity leave has been slow to advance in the United States companies dont want to pay for it.Since the employer has to pay the salary during the leave period, the amendment might turn out to be counterproductiveThe innovative thing to do would be to bring in paternity benefit, Sushmita Dev of the gegenseite Congress partytold the Financial Times. The U.S. lags in paid maternity and paternity leaveThe United States has a long way to go.Out of 41 economically developed nations, the United States is the only one that doesnt mandate any paid leave for new parents, foundfrom theOrganization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).Over the pa st two years, the embarrassment was so keen that American tech giants competed in a kind of arms race to expand parental leave. Netflix gave moms and dads unlimited leave, and others fell in line afterwards.Amazons company culture has been described as cutthroat, and cameunder fire before growing its parental leave policy.Reportedly, after an employee miscarried twins, she jetted off for a business trip the day after her operation. Her boss reportedly said,Im sorry, the work is still going to need to get doneFrom where you are in life, trying to start a family, I dont know if this is the right place for you, her boss said, according to an August 2015 New York Times article.Amazon objected to its portrayal in the article in The New York Times, according to CNN.But Amazon does offer greater leave todayAmazon offers up to up to 4 weeks of paid pre-partum medical leave, followed by 10 weeks of paid maternity leave. Additionally, all new parents who have been at Amazon for a year or more can take a 6-week paid parental leave, the Amazon website says.According to the site, the company also has a Leave Share program allowing parents to share all or some of the paid leave with a working spouse or partner whos employer does not provide paid parental leave. The companys Ramp Back Program gives news moms or primary care givers as much as eight weeks of flexible time and a choice of part-time options.. Employees also have options in terms of when to start their leave. Before this policy change in November 2015, birth mothers could get eight weeks of paid maternityleave, and other parents didnt have access to paid leave, according to The Washington Post.Support for paid parental leaveA push toward further international acceptance of paid parental leave was in the headlines this week.UN Goodwill Ambassador and actress Anne Hathawayrallied for the expansion of paid parental leave among countries, companies and institutions at the UN on International Womens Day.Paid parental leav e is not about taking days off work it is about creating freedom to define roles, to choose how to invest time, and to establish new, positive cycles of behavior. Companies that have offered paid parental leave for employees have reported improved employee retention, reduced absenteeism and training costs, and boosted productivity and morale. Far from not being able to afford to have paid parental leave, it seems we cant afford not to, Hathaway said.

Youre overworking yourself right now, and heres how to stop it

Youre overworking yurself right now, and heres how to stop itYoure overworking yourself right now, and heres how to stop itWork-life balance is impossible, and the experts prove it.An article by Brigid Schulte in New York Magazine highlights the fact that even the people who have all the answers about achieving work-life balance struggle to apply the same concepts to their own lives. She calls this the experts dilemma.Schulte mentions how one expert on the concept was leadingthe global gender, diversity, and work-life office of a major global tech company, and jetting off to help workers with it internationally when she ended up in a German hospital with a potentially life-threatening blood clot.Arianna Huffington, founder and CEO of Thrive Global, calls herself a sleep evangelist. Yesterday, shepostedabout how when she collapsed from burnout and exhaustion 10 years ago, her cheekbone broke, and she woke up in a pool of blood. So shegot more serious about her health- she eventually l eft The Huffington Post and started Thrive Global. When does overwork become too much? Many overachieving people have stories of working so hard that they reached a point of health crisis heart attacks, worsening of symptoms of depression or anxiety, or physical injuries. Theyre a special breed of wake-up call for workaholism.Ideally we would be paying enough attention to avoid such crises. Situations like these force the questionDo you finally have to get sick to realize that the way you work is putting you in danger?Even experts on the subject rarely follow their own advice. Another expert told Schulte,Every time I have to go give a talk, I always say, Do as I say, not as I do.That expert studies how work-life balance conflict makes us feel stressed and guilty, and affects our health, but also deals with stress because of the conflict in her own life - which goes to show that changing ones own behavior is hard even for those with excellent information to work with.As difficult as i t can be to put yourself first, there are ways to do so- even when youre getting hit with obligations from all directions.1. You need to sleep. You really do.RAND Corporation said in 2016 that according to a report, a lack of sleep among the U.S. working population is costing the economy up to $411 billion a year, which is 2.28 percent of the countrys GDP.Huffington has a lot offaith in sleep. Business Insider reported in 2013 that there were two nap rooms at The Huffington Post. The Huffington Postalso reported that Google, Ben Jerrys and Zappos followed suit. Many workplaces have adopted nap pods, and there are a host of apps and daily techniques you can use as wellto sleep better. The key shift in mindset is to make sleep the center of your work strategy. Sleep is not for the weak- you need it to survive at work and at home.2. You need to take time off, too. There is a national crisis of ignoring vacation time. A 2016 study of 5,641 American workers who clock in more than 35 hours per week by Project Time Off and the U.S. Travel Association found that55% of American employees who participated said they didnt use all their vacation days in 2015.Were not perpetual motion machines. Even if you love your job, getting too used to it makes you less effective. Vacations - even if you spend them at or near home - act as a necessary reset for our bodies and minds. Vacations remind you that youre a human outside of work, and spending time getting to know yourself and pursuing your interests outside of work can help your personal and professional development.Need more proof? People who dont take vacations also dont promoted. A 2016study also found that workers who use 10 or less vacation daysare less likely to have received a raise or bonus in the last three years than those who took 11 days or more. The study also found thatthe amount of time taken also shows a clear correlation to happiness at home. The more vacation days used, the lower the stress at home.3. Respec t the time you do haveYou cant do everything, so youll have to get comfortable saying no. The theory behind this is almost karmic maybe if we treat time with more respect, time will respect us.Elizabeth Fenner wrote about how to prioritize yourself for Real Simple- she suggests making a wish list to help youcarve outfor certain things you want to do, then rank the items in order of importance to you, andtoconcentrate on one or two of them.If you know what you want truly makes you happy, youll have an easier time putting yourself first.Taking your time seriously can help you succeed in your career at the very least, it can help protect your health.

If you want more innovation, hire a more diverse tech team

If you want mora innovation, hire a more diverse tech teamIf you want more innovation, hire a more diverse tech teamIf you want more innovation, hire a more diverse tech teamHiring for diversity rolls off the tongue easily, as it has for decades. But this HR slogan is much more than a PR play. There are concrete business imperatives for fielding a diverse workforce, especially in technology.According to a report by Ernst Young, companies that rank high for hiring diverse candidates are 35% more likely to show higher financial returns in their industry. So, theres a bottom line imperative. But for technology, its more than just profit margins that are impacted by diverse talent. Diverse teams also lead to more and better innovation. You want creative kstenerosion thats the result of different viewpoints, says Jennifer Brown, principal of Jennifer Brown Consulting. Its difficult or impossible for homogeneous groups to look at old problems in new waysand thats a critical element of inno vation. But despite evidence that diversity breeds innovation, even top tech firms struggle to reach this goal, particularly with female, African-American, and Latinx populations.Among 10 of the biggest-name tech firms, Microsoft and Facebook rank near the bottom, with only 19% of technology positions held by women, according to a Recode analysis of company data. Amazon is near the top, with 27% of women in tech jobsstill a long way from parity. In 2018, only 2.5% of Googles total workforce was African-American, and just 3.6% was Latinx, according to a company report. This is a huge problem for business because tech workforces, where white men dominate, are developing products and services for diverse customer bases.Yes, achieving diversity is hard, but its well worth the effort. So lets talk about investments that your organization can make to improve the diversity of its technical teams.Pivot the way you think about resumes and job descriptionsWhen companies seek to connect with new and diverse audiences, they need a team of technologists who represent those audiences. This leads to better UI, better products, and overall better customer experiences. But how do you create these teams when all youre presented with is a sea of resumes that dont tell a human story, just a list of abilities and achievements?People have been hiring mediocre people who look like themselves for millennia, says Brown. Youve got to work hard to create diverse teams. This starts with how you write the job description. Research shows, for instance, that women will only apply to jobs where they feel 100% qualified, so if they see a list of job requirements where they feel proficient for only 75% of them, they may not apply for the job at all.Try only listing the must-haves on your list of job requirements, and resist the temptation to load your job ad with requirements that arent necessary and could cause certain candidates to abstain. Also, think beyond the traditional resume. Some observe rs see solely resume-based job applications as especially ineffective in tech.Ive looked at tens of thousands of resumes, and in software engineering roles, there is often very little correspondence between how someone looks on paper and whether they can actually do the job, writes Aline Lerner, a former tech recruiter and CEO of the video-interviewing platform interviewing.io.Not all candidates follow the same career trajectory, and diverse backgrounds lead to experience levels that can appear different on paper. Lerner suggests that rather than relying solely on work history and experience, recruiters should instead use tests that assess cognitive abilities and relevant skills.Highlight diversity in your employer brandingOrganizations that seek to build more diversity into their tech teams can begin with their employer brand. Whether its your career site, social channels, or how you present yourself at industry events, you want to position your company as being as diverse as possi ble, and highlight the strength of your diverse workforce.Additionally, its just as important for recruiters, HR people, and hiring managers to make diversity a constant in their communications with candidates.Companies should talk about their diversity commitment with every interviewee, not just those who are perceived to be members of an underrepresented group, says Brown. Organizations need to select candidates who understand the value of diversity.Recruiters sometimes have to walk a fine line between pleasing clients who are saying they want to hire for a cultural fit while at the same time professing a desire for greater diversity in their tech departments, says Brown. In order to create diversity, youve got to be willing to think beyond cultural fit and hire candidates whose background and outlook brings the new ideas and innovation you need.Connect with diverse communitiesTo raise the proportion of underrepresented groups in your candidate pool, your company needs to reach ou t to organizations that represent those groups. One such organization is Opportunity Hub, which works to improve career opportunities in tech for members of minority groups. For instance, Opportunity Hub brings hundreds of students from historically black colleges and universities to Austin to interview with technology companies.Employers can start to level the playing field of educational attainment by developing and funding active outreach programs. A lot of companies are creating apprenticeships for career changers and investing in outreach to educate prospects on the process to get them up to speed before the technical interview, says Lerner.People with nontraditional educational backgrounds are not as socialized in the standard algorithmic interview, Lerner adds. If you went to Stanford or MIT or wherever, you got of a lot of practice in technical interviewing. So you get very used to the format, which is a learned skill.Diversify your management and the recruiting teamTalking u p diversity is important, but the proof is in the composition of the teams leading your company and its recruitment efforts.Effective diversity and inclusion efforts have to start with corporate governance, with putting women and people of color on the board and in the C suite, says Rodney Sampson, CEO of Opportunity Hub.. You have to have leaders with backbone. Finally, technical candidates will not be convinced of a companys commitment to diversity until they interview with people who look like them. The process needs to include interviewers who reflect the gender or ethnicity of the person being interviewed, says Sampson. So, creating a diverse tech team shouldnt just be something you do for the optics. It can benefit your bottom line and the technology you hope to innovateif youre willing to take steps toward changing the make-up of your tech talent pool.

Cool Advertising Ideas for Pet Shops

Cool Advertising Ideas for Pet ShopsCool Advertising Ideas for Pet ShopsThere are loads of fun, creative advertising ideas that can help to further promote your pet geschftsleben. Better yet, these dont necessarily cost a lot. Here are some very cool advertising concepts Business Cards A lot of people neglect to realize that business cards are, indeed, a form of advertising. These can also be a form of creative advertising in that one can design them to be fun and colorful. (Just be sure not to clutter them with too much info.) Moreover, business cards can be very inexpensive. For example, Vista Print offers sets of 500 premium cards starting at $10. You can even design your business cards utilizing special templates the company provides. Or you can upload your pet shops logo for a truly unique design. To ensure that people dont toss your business cards, you could go one step further and transform your cards into refrigerator magnets for a more lasting impression. Community Ne wspaper Advertising Unlike larger daily newspapers and glossy magazines, advertising in smaller community weekly and niche newspapers is less costly. Plus, these reach more concentrated audiences than the larger publications, which are geared toward a broader segment of the population. Also, weeklies have a more extended shelf life than daily newspapers because they are on the street for longer periods of time. As someone who was an editor at a diverse variety of publications including dailies, glossy magazines, alternative newspapers and community weeklies, I can attest that you do get more bang for your advertising buck with weeklies and other community publications. Penny saver type publications are also excellent print advertising outlets because people peruse them specifically for the ads. Specialty Advertising and Promotional Products The possibilities with this advertising are endless. You can have your business name embossed on everything from pens to coffee mugs and mo use pads, at reasonable costs. As I suggested in my blog post about environmentally friendly customer purchase shopping bag options, selling reusable totes with your pet shops logo is not only earth-friendly, its also a great way to advertise your business and diversify your inventory. There are tons of companies that sell branded reusable totes for businesses. A Furry Unique Advertising Concept Meanwhile, another cute, creative advertising idea is to enlist your pet clients to serve as four-legged billboards. You could sell doggie T-shirts embossed with your pet shops logo. For a less expensive option, you might consider selling bandanas for pooches. You could also periodically host contests and give a few of these away as prizes. So its a win-win for everyone. Special Events as Advertising Vehicles There are all kinds of creative possibilities with this advertising concept. On an ongoing basis, a pet shop can host events featuring experts ranging from dog trainers to repre sentatives from animal rescue groups and a pet psychic. How to Get Free TV Advertising If you want to go all out, you could come up with ways to interest the media in these events. One idea is to invite a local TV news personality who is a known pet lover to your pet shop for a special appearance, along with his or her pet, if possible. If they agree, you are guaranteed to get television coverage. Host Pet Holiday Celebrations Another cool advertising and promotional idea are to hold in-store events that celebrate pet holidays, possibly with applicable items for sale, free pet treats, and contests. For example, October is Adopt a Dog Month. Why not hold a kickoff party for your canine clients? You could even host a doggie fashion show, with prizes for the best-dressed pets For a list of national pet holidays, check out Gone-ta-Pott.com, a directory of every holiday imaginable. Some Other Advertising Options Free Web sites, such as CraigslistNewslettersPartnering with anim al shelters to host pet adoption daysSocial Media Sites, such as Facebook and Twitter The list of really fun, creative, low-cost ways to advertise and promote a pet shop is virtually endless. All it takes is some phantasie and the ability to think outside the box.

Do the Right Thing

Do the Right Thing Do the Right Thing Do the Right Thing A bridge collapses. A minivan is recalled. A power plant idles. When technology goes awry in today's scandal-du-jour media culture, it can taint the public view of the designers and engineers involved in these high-stakes mishaps. Somewhere along the line, the cynics say, somebody must have cut a corner, returned a favor, taken a bribe or simply didn't know what to do. That reaction diminishes all well-trained, well-principled, and well-intentioned engineers even those who in hindsight may have made a poor decision or two. Technology-based tragedies can take place without ethical missteps, and ethical missteps don't always end in tragedy. But in a changing world where we entrust our fortunes and our lives to engineered technologies like never before, engineers at all levels and from all cultures can benefit by revisiting current ethical guidelines and decision-making skills. The Year of Ethical Thinking Engineering schools have often been accused of a laissez faire stance on formal ethics training in the graduate curriculum. An article in this year's edition brought the topic to light in a compelling manner, citing UC Berkeley materials science and engineering graduate student Liz Boatman's tough critique of her school in the Berkeley Science Review. UC Berkeley engineers are barely being provided the most basic tools to be able to address the tough decisions that must be made in the real world. And then we simply throw those tools away, she wrote. The inspiration for her commentary? Finding a discarded copy of an engineering ethics in the department trash can. Is this the lone viewpoint of a passionate student, or does it underscore a bigger problem in the engineering educational system? The results of a recent ASME Ethics Survey (see infographics at left) shed some light on the subject. And recently, ABET (formerly the Accrediting Board for Engineering and Technology) added an understanding of professional responsibility and ethics to its list of required student outcomes for accredited programs. The U.S. News article credits the change with a spike in ethics offerings in engineering programs across the nation. How a school goes about interpreting and fulfilling that requirement is left to its discretion. Some have developed standalone courses in ethics, while others emphasize it as a component of other core courses. Sometimes ethics enters the curriculum in places well beyond the engineering department. I try to help students from other countries anticipate those circumstances when ethical issues and cultural issues can be at odds or connect in unexpected ways, says Julia Youst, an ESL instructor at Portland State University, Portland, OR, who incorporates ethics into a customized Intensive English Language Program course tailored to international engineering students. In terms of both their academic careers while in theU.S., and in their future careers as engineers navigating the global workplace, international students should be conscious of how the ethical standards of their own country compare to practices in other cultures. Topics such as plagiarism, for example, fall at different places along the ethical spectrum in different cultures. That's a growing challenge in our global economy, she says, and international students aren't the only ones who can benefit by thinking about the same topics. Ethics in engineering is receiving more attention these days, and schools hoping to be accredited by ABET now need to show that their students understand ethics. But other than that requirement, why is it important, and how best can we teach it? Making It a Habit Ethical guidelines cover what to doacknowledge mistakes, be honest, be safe, take responsibilityand what not to dodon't discriminate, don't make decisions beyond your competence, don't reveal trade secrets. But professional ethics is more than just common sense, good intentions and an occasional brown-bag lunch topic. You can never predict when situations will occur that require consideration from an ethical rather than strictly procedural standpoint. Even if you interact with nothing but machines, you can benefit from knowing your workplace's policies for handling things like whistleblowing, conflicts of interest and contacts with the media. Professional organizations such as ASME spell out the specific competencies that an ethical engineer must possess. Re-read them and be prepared. If you are interested in contemplating ethics on a grander scale, Youst recommends Thinking Ethically: A Framework for Moral Decision Making, published by faculty at Santa Clara University's Markkula School for Applied Ethics. Reviewing case studies in engineering ethics is another excellent way to keep ethical thinking on the front burner. One comprehensive source includes a detailed taxonomy of case studies relevant to engineering, along with dozens of studies ranging from the infamous (Chernobyl) to the seemingly innocuous (cheating at golf) that allow engineers to reflect on and discuss how individual ethical choices influence outcomes. Mechanical engineers will appreciate the collection of National Science Foundation workshop cases in engineering ethics that lay out numerical formulas for ethical decision making in a range of very practical situations. But if all of this complexity confuses your ethical compass, go back to basics and review ASME's fundamental ethical principles. The more you embrace the big picture, the easier it is to do the right thing. Glowing the Roads

Glowing the Roads Glowing the Roads Glowing the Roads Since the 1970s, kids have been climbing on top of the kitchen table, stretching tippy-toed to the overhead bulb, holding the pose for a minute while their Silly Putty absorbs enough energy, then hopping down, flicking off the light switch, and diving under the nearest covers to bathe in the eerie green glow. In the past 40-odd years, glow-in-the-dark materials have not had much purpose beyond this juvenile pleasure of holding a radiant toy in the dark. But now phosphorescent materials have hit the street, paving the way for a future in which our travels at night will be lit by paints and polyurethane emitting the charge they received from the sun during the day. The folks at Studio Roosegaarde in the Netherlands, for instance, used a glow-in-the-dark paint to line a ribbon of asphalt, highway N329, in Oss. Just whats in that paint will remain unilluminated, however. We dont give technical information about the Glowing Lines, says project manager Jamaica den Heijer. The lines charge at day-time and glow at night for eight hours. Image: Studio Roosegaarde The secret formula, though, is still being tweaked, as rain and wear have dampened its shine in its first months of existence. And, while the lines were initially conceived as a way of adding an extra element of safety to a strip of roadway, it ended up having the opposite effect: some drivers have been turning off their lights to better experience the glow at the roads edge. The biggest challenge was changing the law, says Charlotte de Mos, Studio Roosegaardes office manager. A Dutch law dictates that all road markings must be white, so the studio was required to warn drivers of the change. The first pilot needed to include a sign that said Watch out! Road markings missing. While adding glow-in-the-dark lines to a highway may have surprisingly thorny legal and technical hurdles to leap, making a glow-in-the-dark car turns out to be a much simpler affair. An all-electric LEAF with glow-in-the-dark car paint applied to it. Image: Nissan Nissan wanted to do just that to market their electric Leaf. So they called Hamish Scott, founder of Pro-Teq and Nevana Designs, and he sprayed the car with his proprietary glow-in-the-dark polyurethane (the essential ingredient, strontium aluminate, is the same thing youll find in todays glow-in-the-dark Silly Putty). Nissan knew of Scotts product, thanks to his glow-in-the-dark Starpath, a luminous path in Cambridges Christs Pieces park that has survived weather, tires, and soles for five years without a loss in glowability. When we created our Starpath, people said This is a nice gimmick, says Scott, but we do this day in and day out for a living. This is not a gimmick, and if you think its a gimmick, then think again. While the Leafs glow may be just a marketing tactic, there are many places where that same glow can save dollars and even lives. To be able to generate power from the sun to a path glowing at nightthis is of real practical use to the world, he says. The applications are endless, anything you can think of, whether its your glasses, life jackets, life buoys, lifeboats, airplanes, yachts. If you tip a yacht up in the middle of the ocean it would be very easy to find. These are massive, massive benefits. The most massive of those benefits may be long paths, like the Starpath, and even roadways, in countries without power. Scott insists that the Leaf and the Starpath and his many other projects are far more stunning to the naked eye than they are in photos. Anyone hoping to get an eyeful should get in viewing distance of the Gumball 3000 Rally this year where, Scott says, You might see a glowing car in amongst that lot, but it will be very interesting and the type of car will be very interesting as well. And anyone who wants to have a glow-in-the-dark car of their own will find the coating reasonably priced, in the range of a specialized paint job. According to Scott, his coating is invisible in the day and capable of glowing for ten to twelve hours at night (though the first hours will be the brightest). And his product will never die, he says. That is, it will keep glowing for more than 25 years. Its capable of surviving temperatures as cool as -103 degrees F and as hot as 347 degrees F. In places where the tarmac starts to melt, like Dubai, the glowing polyurethane remains unaffected. And, in fact, countries from both the hottest climes and the coldest climes have contacted Scott about using his product. The biggest challenge for us is to make it brighter and brighter and brighter and to make it last longer and longer and longer, he says. How can I put it? Maybe because Im a little bit thick, I dont give up. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. Learn more about energy solutions for a sustainable future at ASME Power Energy 2015. 6 ways to be more efficient with your time

6 ways to be more efficient with your time 6 ways to be more efficient with your time It’s hard to be efficient.Sometimes it feels like the world doesn’t make any sense. Sometimes  you  don’t make any sense. And sometimes it feels like it’s all a conspiracy. As we’ll see shortly, these are all, in a way, true.Dan  Ariely  is the king of irrational behavior. Not that he’s more irrational than you or I, but he’s studied an impressive amount of it. Dan  is a behavioral economist at Duke University and the New York Times bestselling author of three wonderful books: Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions The Upside of Irrationality: The Unexpected Benefits of Defying Logic The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty: How We Lie to Everyone- Especially Ourselves Most recently he’s turned his attention to the irrationality of how we use our time and has helped create a new smart-calendar  app,  Timeful. What’s great is the data from  Timeful  is helping us learn things  about what works and what doesn’t as it relates to productivity.I gave Dan a call to hear what he had to say about how we can improve time management, how to be efficient and how to get more done.1. The world  is  working against youThis isn’t a conspiracy theory and a  tinfoil hat isn’t required, but we are spending more of our time in environments that  have their own agendas.Billboards and TV ads want you to buy. The links on the internet encourage you to click. Notifications on your smartphone beckon you.Our  default is  now a constant, aggressive chain of siren songs from our environment. Here’s Dan:The world is not acting in our long-term benefit. Imagine you walk down the street and every store is trying to get your money right now; in your pocket you have a phone and every app wants to control your attention right now. Most of the entities in our lives really want us to make mistakes in their favor. So the world is making things very, very difficult. If you followed every directive from your surroundings  these days you’d quickly be broke, obese, and constantly distracted. It’s like we’re surrounded by scheming thieves: thieves of our time, thieves of our attention, thieves of our productivity. And how do pickpockets steal your stuff?  Distraction. Here’s Dan:I have a friend who’s a magician and he pickpockets people in his show.  He said when he started he used to tap people to distract them. He’d  tap them, they would lose their  concentration  and he could take their watch.  He said now he realizes that  merely  asking people questions is enough to make them lose the ability to focus. Not having a plan, goals or a system in today’s world is dangerous because the default isn’t neutral.(For more on what the most productive people do to reduce distractions, click  here.)So what does this mean is the first big step to productivity?2. Control your environment or it will control youWe can’t control our environment everywhere we go, of course, but we have more control than we usually choose to exercise. If you  banish  distractions and control your calendar you  can make sure your environment is ripe for productivity. Here’s Dan:One of the big lessons from social science in the last 40 years is that environment matters. If you go to a buffet and the buffet is organized in one way, you will eat one thing. If it’s organized in a different way, you’ll eat different things. We think that we make decisions on our own but the environment influences us  to a great degree. Because of that we need to think about how to  change our  environment. What does research show the most productive computer programmers have in common? It’s not experience,  salary, or hours spent on a project. They had employers who  crea ted an environment free from distraction.Via  Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking:…top performers overwhelmingly worked for companies that gave their workers the most privacy, personal space, control over their physical environments, and freedom from interruption.Research shows  distractions make us stupid.Your surroundings should  make the things you need to do easy and the things you shouldn’t do hard. What happened when Google put MM’s in containers instead of out in the open? People ate 3 million less of them in one month. Here’s Dan:Here’s an experiment that Google did recently. The MMs in their New York office used to be in baskets. So instead  they put  them in bowls with lids. The lid doesn’t  require a lot of effort to lift but it  reduced the number of MMs consumed in their New York office by 3 million a  month.(For more on how the most organized people stay on track, click  here.)Okay, so you need to manage your environment. How d o you manage your calendar?3. Write everything downWe all know how fallible our brains can be yet we routinely trust ourselves to remember and follow through on things. Bad.What did research from the  Timeful app  tell Dan? Most people don’t write down the things they need to do. When you do write things down, you’re more likely to  follow through on them. If it’s important, write it down.  Reminders,  post-its, and  calendars  are all good tools.Stanford professor Jennifer Aaker  points to research showing that  your calendar can make you happier:Take the things that make you happy and energized and schedule them more often.Sound stupidly simple? Research says we don’t do it enough. Here’s  Jennifer:…there is often a gap between where people say they  want  to spend their time and how they  actually  spend their time…  once you identify the activities and people with whom you want to spend more time, calendaring your time thoughtfully becomes critical.   When you put something on a calendar, you’re more likely to actually do that activity â€" partly because you’re less likely to have to make an active decision whether you should do it â€" because it’s already on your calendar.(For more on how to schedule to-do’s like a pro, click  here.)So you’ve written down everything that needs to get done. Should you just run d own the list in order? Absolutely not.4. When you do what you do is keyAll hours are not created equal. What did Dan’s  Timeful  research show about our most productive hours? You have a window of 2-2.5 hours of peak productivity per day, starting a couple hours  after waking. Here’s Dan:…it turns out that most people are productive in the first two hours of the morning. Not immediately after waking,  but if you get up  at 7 you’ll be most productive from around from 8-10:30.Those are the hours when you should be working on your most cognitively demanding tasks. The big projects. The stuff that really moves the needle. But what did Dan find that most people did with those hours?Email and Facebook. You need to guard those hours for important tasks. Designate that part of your day  as “protected time.”I’ve posted before that  2.5 to 4 hours after waking is when your brain is sharpest:Studies show that alertness and memory, the ability to think clearly and to learn, can vary by between 15 and 30 percent over the course of a day. Most of us are sharpest some two and a half to four hours after waking. When I  interviewed  willpower expert  Roy Baumeister  he said that  early morning  is also when you’re most disciplined:The longer people have been awake, the more self-control problems happen.  Most things go bad in the evening. Diets are broken at the evening snack, not at breakfast or in the middle of the morning. Impulsive crimes are mostly committed after midnight. In  studies of geniuses, most  did their best work early in the day.(For more on the schedule very successful people follow, click  here.)So you need to shape your environment and protect your peak hours. What should you  avoid  doing?5. The four horsemen of the productivity apocalypseDan’s research found  4 things that were the biggest time wasters:1. MeetingsWe all know how meetings waste time and multiply like rabbits. The solution?Schedule your work time on your calendar. Have a presen tation to work on? Block out hours for it.If people try to put a meeting there, you can say you have a conflict. You do. Your work matters.A calendar should be a record of anything  that  needs to get done - not merely of interruptions like meetings and calls.2. EmailMost people simply spend too much time in their inboxes to accomplish anything of substance. Here’s how to  stop email from taking over your life.3. MultitaskingPut aside the distractions and do one thing at a time.   Across the board,  multitasking  lowers productivity.4. “Structured Procrastination”What’s structured procrastination? It’s doing little things that give us the  feeling  of progress instead of  deep work  that  really  makes progress. Here’s Dan:So making to-do lists and crossing them off is an example of this. Because those things are easily measurable, they make us  feel  as if we’re achieving things. But real achievements take time. Progress is not always linear. Big projects  aren’t alw ays immediately rewarding.  Things that are really complex don’t give us the same sense of momentary enjoyment but those are the things that give us the real sense of achievement and progress once we get to them. But I don’t think we get to them enough.Avoid these four and you’ll see an  80/20 style  jump in your productivity.(For more on work-life balance, click  here.)So you are making progress. You’re more productive during the day. But we all get tired or bored. What’s the best thing to do then?6. No, you don’t need an email breakYou tell yourself you  need an email break, and that you’ll be rejuvenated and work better afterward. Problem is, that’s just not true.Getting your head into and out of your work takes time. Switching tasks  has cognitive costs that reduce efficiency. Here’s Dan:People think that checking email refreshes them. It doesn’t.  If you want to get refreshed, close your eyes, meditate, breathe deeply, or think about some things that are impo rtant. The reality is the right way to do things is shut your email down and focus on what you’re doing. In fact, research shows that frequent email checks can temporarily lower your intelligence  more than being stoned.Constant emailing  reduces mental ability by an average of about 10 IQ points. For men, it’s about three times the effect of smoking marijuana.Via  Your Brain at Work: Strategies for Overcoming Distraction, Regaining Focus, and Working Smarter All Day Long:A study done at the University of London found that constant emailing and text-messaging reduces mental capability by an average of ten points on an IQ test. It was five points for women, and fifteen points for men. This effect is similar to missing a night’s sleep. For men, it’s around three times more than the effect of smoking cannabis. Some of you are already saying: “But I have to check email!” Yes, you do. But probably not that often. As  Cal Newport  says, “Shallow work is what stops you from gett ing fired. Deep work is what gets you promoted.”And email is shallowest of work. We got men on the moon  without email.  And email can wait while you get the important things done.(For more on how the most successful people manage their time, click  here.)So Dan has a lot of tips for us. How do we pull all of this together and be more efficient?Sum upHere are Dan’s tips: The world is not designed to help you achieve your long term goals. Passivity is not going to get you where you want to go. Control your environment or it will control you. Optimize your workspace  for what you need to achieve. Write  the things you need to do down on your calendar. You’re more likely to do what you write down. You have about 2 hours of peak productivity, usually early in the morning. Protect those hours and use them wisely. Meetings, email, multitasking and structured procrastination are the biggest time wasters. No, you don’t need an email break. Switching tasks  reduces effectiveness as your brain transitions. The more you do it, the less effective you are. You don’t need to account for every minute. You don’t need to agonize over wasted seconds. It’s just about improving. And none of us are infallible. When I asked Dan about work-life balance, what did he say?I struggle with it every day.  You and I are doing this interview and it’s  Saturday, Eric.So nobody’s perfect. UCMJ Punitive Article 115 - Malingering

UCMJ Punitive Article 115 - Malingering UCMJ Punitive Article 115 - Malingering Article 115 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) deals with malingering. Although its sort of an outdated word, malingering is a serious offense in the military. It means youre pretending to do the job youre assigned instead of actually doing it, and it carries serious penalties which vary based on a few specific factors. According to the UCMJ:   The essence of this offense is the design to avoid performance of any work, duty, or service which may properly or normally be expected of one in the  military service. Whether to avoid all duty  or only a particular job, it is the purpose to shirk which characterizes the offense. Hence, the nature or permanence of a self-inflicted injury is not material on the question of guilt, nor is the seriousness of a physical or mental disability which is a ?shame. What Constitutes Malingering in the Military Being found guilty of malingering depends on a few factors. If you know youre assigned to a specific duty or area of work, and pretend to be sick or injured, or if you intentionally hurt yourself to avoid that duty, then you fit the criteria of a malingerer.   The UCMJ states: “Any person subject to this chapter who for the purpose of avoiding work, duty, or service”- (1) feigns illness, physical disablement, mental lapse or derangement; or(2) intentionally inflicts self-injury; shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.Elements.(1) That the accused was assigned to  or was aware of prospective assignment to, or availability for, the performance of work, duty, or service;(2) That the accused feigned illness, physical disablement, mental lapse or derangement, or intentionally inflicted injury upon himself or herself; and(3) That the accused’s purpose or intent in doing so was to avoid the work, duty, or service. Note: If the offense was committed in time of war or in a hostile fire pay zone, add the following element(4) That the offense was committed (in time of war) (in a hostile fire pay zone). Punishment for Malingering Depending on the nature of the offense, theres a range of punishment for malingering. If it can be proven that the accused person intentionally injured himself, or pretended to be injured, thats the baseline. If the acts happened during wartime or a hostile war zone, the punishments will be more severe.   According to the UCMJ, feigning an injury will get you a dishonorable discharge and a one-year confinement, during which youll forfeit all pay and allowances. About the Role of a Manager

About the Role of a Manager About the Role of a Manager Much like everything else in our era of change,  the role of a manager is evolving. What used to be predominantly a supervisory and over-the-shoulder type role monitoring the work of others, is now a blend of leader, coach, strategist, project leader, team developer and even team member. The notion of the manager as micro-managing bureaucrat has been retired and replaced with that of a critical enabler of learning and change.   The differences between the two views and roles  are stark. The former (bureaucrat) is a vestige of the industrial revolution when the focus was on teaching farmers and artisans to do the same task over and over with ever-increasing efficiency. The latter view reflects our world today where  uncertainty and volatility  in our markets, industries, and firms demand learning and adaptation at the speed of change.   For anyone interested in pursuing a career as a manager or in strengthening your effectiveness in the role, this article offers insights and links to  help you better appreciate the hard work, challenges, and rewards of managing.   Managers Are Closest to the Real Work of the Firm While executives are ultimately responsible for major  strategic decisions, a firms managers are the ones working with the people, customers, and teams driving the business. Some managers lead functional groups such as operations, customer service, marketing, finance, I.T., human resources or one of the many other functions found in an organization. Other managers such as  project managers  or  product managers  are responsible for working with people across all functions in pursuit of initiatives (projects) or respective product categories. Managers translate the firms  goals  into the work of their function. They are measured according to how well their teams perform and meet defined  key performance indicators (KPIs), and their success is based completely on the efforts and success of their team members. The role of a manager is one responsible for the work and results of others. As such, a great deal of the work of a manager focuses on building and supporting an effective team.   Its All About the Team Effective managers operate with a clear view of their role in enabling the success and productivity of others. They strive to create an effective working environment where individuals are free to apply their skills in pursuit of departmental objectives. Todays manager is focused on building teams based on trust and shared values. The goal of the manager is to develop and support a team dedicated to  high performance.  A number of critical tasks in this process include: Scouting  and recruiting great talent.Developing  goals and objectives.Providing  performance feedback.Training  and developing team membersMotivating  high performance. A Managers Decisions Drive Actions Another critical role the manager plays is that of decision-maker when it comes to setting priorities or making tradeoffs. From talent decisions to supporting strategic decisions to helping team members navigate challenging issues, managers are involved in decision-making every hour of every day. Here are a number of supporting articles: Increasingly, Strategy is the Work of the Manager: A strategy is all of the work that goes into determining which customers and markets a firm will pursue and how it will direct its resources to succeed in those areas. Given the proximity of many frontline managers to customers, partners and the critical functions needed to execute on strategy, many managers are integral parts of the strategy process in their organizations. Developing an understanding of the language and tools of strategy is essential for success as a manager in todays world.   The Bottom Line Managing is hard work, as is developing as an effective manager. Its much less about telling people what to do and much more about providing, guidance, clarity on goals and coaching and support. Managing in this era is less of a desk job and much more of a hands-on support role with ample decision-making authority. While some modern theories and pundits  suggest that the role of the manager is obsolete in our world of knowledge workers, a good manager can be the difference maker in the pursuit of  excellence  and high performance in our organizations. Learn How to Promote Your Music Online

Learn How to Promote Your Music Online Learn How to Promote Your Music Online You know you need to do online music promotion, but the number of options available to get the job done can be downright overwhelming. But its clearly important to your success to set up an internet music promotion strategy that works for you. No single blueprint works for everyone, but following a few basic steps will help set you on the right path. Prioritize Promotion The kiss of death for online music promotion is the thought that all you need to do is throw up some social media profiles and wait for the fans to start pouring in. Decide up front that youre going to put some time into developing a strategy and that youre going to resist the urge to surf around on Facebook all day and pretend its work. Have a Website Dont forget to create and maintain your own website. Theres no substitute for having your own website. If you know you wont have the time to maintain it, it might be worth outsourcing that job to a web-savvy friend or family member, or when you start selling work, hiring an intern. Find Your Fans With so many promotional tools out there, you can be sure your fans are not on all of them. Because you need your online music promotion work to be manageable, be selective about the sites you use. At the top of the list should be the sites where people like your fans congregate. Indie rockers neednt post their vids all over WorldStarHipHop and mainstream country artists shouldnt try and blow up on Pitchfork. Not sure where your fans are? Well, where are you? Chances are, your own internet habits are a good guide. One way to further engage your fans- and to gather more info about them so you can target your promotion strategy- is to give up some goods in exchange for the information. For instance, offer a free download in exchange for signing up for your newsletter. Depending on how you structure your newsletter sign-up, you can get email addresses, favorite websites, geographic locations; a veritable marketing info jackpot. Plus, your newsletter is one more tool to keep your fans in the loop. Develop Strategies When we talk about internet music promotion, were really talking about two things- getting reviews and other coverage on blogs and internet magazines, and your own promotion work that involves interacting with your fans, usually using social media. You need a different plan for each. Contrary to popular belief, getting actual coverage- reviews and interviews- for your music online is a bit easier than nailing down a newspaper or magazine write-up. You need some music, a press release, and a database of contacts. Creating a contact database is the trickiest part if youve never done any promo before, but theres no mystery. Set aside an afternoon, make a list of sites or blogs you like, and create a spreadsheet that contains the contact info for each. Contact them to make a pitch and start the dialogue. For interaction with fans, social media is a necessary jumping-off point. Give your fans something of value while social networking,  let them in on the recording process, tell them when youre writing new songs and so on. They will enjoy hearing about your day-to-day life every once in a while, but remember to deliver the goods as well. Make a Promo Routine Set aside time each day or week to manage your online presence, just dont allow it to take up all your time. It can help with time management to use a post scheduler that posts on social media posts throughout a day or over several days. Then you can set a time to interact with the responses your fans will send.
